We have all travelled down the path where we first came to the Canadian shores, built our lives, built our families, achieved our successes and reached our milestones. And then comes a time in our lives, when we miss having our families around us and share those successes.
Canada welcomes you to sponsor your OWN parents and grandparents. They could be related to you by blood or you could have been adopted by your parents.
You cannot sponsor your spouse’s parents and grandparents, however, you can be a co-signer for your spouse as only they can sponsor their family.
You can sponsor your parents via the Parent and Grandparent program. It is a limited capacity program wherein you submit the interest to sponsor form. The applicants are randomly selected from the pool of invitees, and if you are chosen, you will receive the invitation to apply. Thereafter, you must submit your application to sponsor your family as well as their application for permanent residency to Canada.
Alternatively, your can sponsor your family on a Parent and Grandparent Supervisa, a temporary resident permit that allows your parents and grandparents to stay in Canada for up to 2 years, over a period of 10 years. They can enter Canada multiple times.
For either of these programs, you need to meet the minimum income necessary to be eligible to sponsor your family. The income you need to meet has not been updated yet for the year 2021. For sponsoring the parents on the Parent and Grandparent program, you need to meet the income for the last 3 years, and for the Supervisa program, you need to meet the income for the last 1 year. You need to count yourself, your spouse, any dependents you may have, any previous sponsorships you have held, and the parents you invite. The following table depicts the number of family members and the amount of incomes you need to meet over the last three years.
